What is Boyfriend Country?

In today’s country music landscape, there seem to be ever-expanding subgenres taking over the space. We’ve talked about the craze of Male Regret country and the phenomenon behind it (which you can read about here), but today we’re diving into Boyfriend Country.

In simple terms, Boyfriend Country is all about “I love her so much and I don’t want to lose her,” while Male Regret music is all about “I lost her and I regret watching her go.”

Boyfriend Country is more personal than a regular country love song. These songs describe the girl and who she is, while traditional country love songs usually focus on the relationship as a whole. Boyfriend Country shines a light on the partner specifically.

What makes this subgenre so endearing is that women are written about with such high regard, admiration, and love. These songs show men being genuinely proud of the women they are with.

Examples of Boyfriend Country include “Speechless” by Dan + Shay, “The Painter” by Cody Johnson, and “Painted You Pretty” by Hudson Westbrook. Each of these songs highlights the woman in an endearing and heartfelt way.

Just like with Male Regret, women love this genre because it reflects the hope that their boyfriends think of them and love them in the same way these songs portray.

Boyfriend Country is for the hopeful romantics out there.

Stay wild, stay in love, stay country.
