Abigail Osborn is a Colorado born country/folk artist who just made her mark releasing her first single with MCA’s Gatsby records called Take a drink. For the last several years Abigail has been making her living as a songwriter in Nashville, writing for some of country’s stars and current up and comers. Her lyricism is boldly cathartic as her current body of work explores many different themes of coming of age, love, heartbreak and grief. However, Take a drink marks the start of a new era for Abigail Osborn. The song disguises itself as sonically fun and upbeat, leaning into a vein of country pop, while the lyrics chronicle a bit of a sadder story in her life. The honesty and vulnerability in her songwriting is always potent and it’s a large part of what makes her so special as an artist and a person.
I got the opportunity to speak to Abigail at her recent show at the Drake underground in Toronto. Opening for Irish artist Aaron Rowe, and asked her about her last project and all the exciting things she has in store.
Almost a year ago she released a full length project called I don’t need to know how this ends.
“Honestly, I did not plan on making any body of work at the time. I was living in LA at the time and the fires happened and I came to Nashville, and kind of just stayed with some friends at the studio for a month and together we just like, kind of locked in and made this body of work. It was really just, me and my friend Tyler making all of it together, recording all the instruments together. I produced it with him and it was just a mirage of like, everything I was feeling at the time and the title of the album was very much kind of born out of, when you start something, you don’t kind of need to know where it’s going.” – Abigail on the creation of I don’t need to know how this ends.
In the last year since that project was released lots in her life has changed, looking back Abigail tells that this capsule of songs was “A body of work I needed to make for like the catharsis of like getting out all those things I need to say, but I think since then I’ve found kind of like a jump off point that I want to jump off from now and I think making the song take a drink with the people I made with feels like kind of fresh, new.”
There’s many big things on the horizon for Abigail but she says her highest hope is that her new music will “bring people together.” which is something she has always had a natural talent for and the catalogue to track. Her music has always been built upon sharing her experiences in ways that are so intimate and specific yet hauntingly relatable, but Take a drink showcases a freer version of Abigail- perhaps a bit more wild hearted.
“I want to talk about things, like I don’t want every song to feel like a happy song. I think there’s a lot I feel like I need to say, and I am just excited, like, as I am writing every day, discovering different ways. I will do that.”
Abigail Osborn is definitely one to watch, with her ability to create songs that make you feel both seen and want to line dance at the same time. Her way of communicating incomputable feelings into beautiful songs and stories connects her to her audience in a way that is very unique, and she’s only getting started! You can stream take a drink on all major streaming platforms!
Stay wild, stay free, stay country!
