Off the Grid and Onto the Open Road: Meet the Mavericks Living Wild in North America’s Forgotten Corners

By Bridget Sinden

We talk often here at Wild Hearted about what kind of life we all want to live and most of us live in a constant state of fight or flight. Do we want to lean into the grind of a career, buying a house, and embracing the rat race – the fight? Or should we live in the moment and chase beautiful sunsets – the flight? Our biggest problem is that now social media lets us see those rebels that are ditching traditional life for something far more unpredictable (and way more photogenic). And we love the flight! So we wanted to inspire more of you to take flight by meeting some real people choosing to live wild and from the heart—and building communities along the way.

Meet Mak and Owen from @bound.for.nowhere

These two full-time nomads ditched their 9-to-5s for a life on the road—living in everything from a Casita trailer to a 4×4 Toyota Tundra. What makes them Wild Hearted? Their commitment to making life a shared creative project. From chasing desert storms to alpine sunrises, they remind us that partnership and adventure are better when intertwined.

Meet Jess and Jake from @thebusandus

They transformed a yellow school bus into a cozy mobile home and hit the road with their daughter, Juniper. What makes them Wild Hearted is their honesty: they document the mess, the magic, and the mechanics. Their story isn’t just wanderlust—it’s love, maintenance, and learning to slow down.

Meet Brianna Madia, Author of Nowhere for Very Long

Brianna’s story is equal parts beautiful and brutal. Her time in a beat-up orange van (Bertha!) and off-grid desert life with her dogs made her a symbol of solo female freedom. Her writing is unfiltered and poetic, shining a light on the emotional toll of this lifestyle without losing the magic.

Bottom Line

We started Wild Hearted to get inspired by people who chose their own path and from the heart and so we want to share these stories with you all. At the end of the day, these modern mavericks are answering a call that’s as old as North America itself – the urge to head west, to seek something different, to prioritize experience over accumulation. They’re proving that the life dream doesn’t always have to include a white picket fence and a 30-year mortgage.

Stay Wild. Stay Adventurous. Stay Fun!
