Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of talking with Robyn Ottolini about fan favourite song, Growing Down. Since then, Robyn has released Growing Down (Into the Roots) as well as her newest single, If Hell Were A Bar.
This tongue and cheek take on what a “hellish” night at the bar might look like, guides you through the emotions and events of what that might entail. Built around vivid, conversational lyrics and a catchy standout hook, this track captures the spiral of forced small talk and fake smiles.
Ottolini shared that,“ There’s nothing worse than running into your ex… until you run into them with someone new. ‘If Hell Were a Bar’ takes that pit in your stomach feeling and drops you right into that moment where you’re trying to keep it together while everything’s spinning. It’s awkward, it’s painful, but it’s also about holding your head high and getting through it anyway. Sometimes hell isn’t just one place, it’s wherever you’re standing the moment you’re introduced to the life that was almost yours. But thank God it wasn’t, right?!”
Written alongside Lauren Vale and John Frank, ‘If Hell Were A Bar’, was a concept that came together organically in the writing room with Robyn sharing that, “It’s personal in the sense that it’s relatable, we’ve all been through something like this. Lauren threw out the hook, and we started talking about what it’s like when you run into your ex and what the worst-case scenario would be if you were already having a bad night. It really came from a place of validating that experience for people.”
